Not so long ago, we sat in movie theatres watching spies and assorted bad guys being caught because of hidden video cameras. Before long, these devices were available to the police although only law enforcement agencies and the rich could afford them.

Today, even someone on a limited budget can afford a high quality surveillance camera. The image quality is excellent, they can be weatherproof. You can even get them in night-vision versions.

These devices have many uses other than catching criminals in the act. You might want video proof of who’s dog is making a mess on your front yard. Maybe you caught just a glimpse of someone lurking around. Either way, a motion triggered hidden video camera will give you all the evidence you could want. The police love it.

If you are a business owner, you probably suffer from employee theft, possibly suffer greatly. Your inventories never come out the way they are supposed to, bank deposits do not match receipts and so forth. A hidden video camera will allow you to gather video evidence of what is being stolen, where and by whom.

Here is an example. A man I know owns a liquor store. He knew someone was stealing some of the product, but he could never figure out how or who. It took months and the loss of many hundred of dollars of stock before he caught a janitor taking some product out the back door in a garbage bag. A simple security camera hidden in the exit sign above the door would of caught the thief in no time.

The devices mentioned here use dvr recording technology. What this means is that they are not only wireless, but they don’t need a central digital recorder. They have one built in with something called an sv card. So as to not use up memory recording hours of no activity, most of them have motion sensors that tell the camera to start recording as it has detected something moving in the field of view. The sensors can be easily programmed to deaden certain areas of the viewing field to work around little kids playing or animals visiting.

When you think you’ve got your man, you bring the camera to your computer and download the video. Voila! There it all is on your screen.

These are just two examples of how these cameras can be used.

They can be hidden in light fixtures, exit signs, wall clocks, coffee makers and just about anything.

Warning: Keep in mind that these cameras DO NOT prevent a crime. They simply record one. To stop crime, you want security cameras that are highly visible and that will be the subject of another article.

When the Afghanistan Emergency Call Center needs help, who do they call? The Kabul Security Camera Center at the Afghan National Police Headquarters. Hidden away in the corner of the ANP HQ lays the Kabul city Security Camera Center, here these dedicated professionals monitor and identify potential criminal activities and insurgent attacks with video surveillance cameras throughout the city of Kabul.

With the popularity of security cameras to protect the home many mistakes are being made in the placement of cameras. If you place a camera in a poor location on the outside of the home, no big deal. But, if you place a camera in a poor location on the inside of the home you could be sued. There are other issues to consider such as privacy on the interior of a home. Following are a few things to consider before going out and purchasing that expensive nanny cam or CCTV system.

Beware of wireless cameras, including baby monitors. Wireless cameras do not know where your house starts and stops. Most wireless cameras can be viewed by anyone, with an inexpensive baby monitor, from outside your home. Neighbors have picked up their neighbor’s nursery camera on their baby monitors. That can be rather embarrassing if you’re in your sleepware or worse, breastfeeding. Even expensive CCTV cameras that are wireless can often be picked up by someone outside the home. Besides the fact that wireless cameras are lower quality, I would never install one in my home for privacy issues.

Never place a camera in an area where someone visiting or working would have a reasonable assumption of privacy such as a bedroom and of course bathroom. If you do, you had better start putting money away for the lawsuit that will follow. To protect yourself in the other rooms of the house I would have signs on the doors that state video cameras used on premises. It is not required in many states, but in a litigation hungry society it may not be a bad idea.

The best locations for cameras in the home would include:
Entry door (this way you can see when your kids come home and who they are bringing with them) Living area or Great Room. Here you cover the most amount of traffic in your home and there is not the assumption of privacy. Swimming pool or hot tub. If the pool or hot tub are inside I would include signs that state video cameras on premises. Home office Liquor cabinet / gun cabinet (or safe) Pet area if you want to keep an eye on your pets.

Even when using a camera in public places within your home keep in mind that if you should have a break-in that hard drive will be taken to the police. If you walk around your home with very little on or enjoy an intimate moment in the living room there will be a lot of eyes watching your recorded image. You have to decide if you want to take this risk or if it would be better to just keep the cameras on the outside of the house. The camera sees everything and you may not want it to in certain rooms within your home. Someone may even be able to hack into the website you choose to view your cameras on, and be able to watch you at anytime. This is not difficult since most people bookmark the site and someone gaining access to your computer could simply click on it.

Also beware of companies that offer offsite monitoring of your cameras. These are companies that you pay a monthly fee and they monitor your cameras. They are not supposed to have access to your cameras, but there is usually a manager who has the ability to download images or they would never be able to access your account.

In conclusion, it may be great to view the inside of your home from work, but you are opening a window into your privacy and you need to consider the downsides. personally I prefer cameras located on the outside of a home, but everyone is different so you just need to weigh the benefits against the potential negative aspects.

It seems that the burglar alarm system, long ago thought to be a sort of luxury item meant only for the wealthy, has over the years become a standard feature found in many middle class households. The thriving sales of security systems continue despite the decreasing trend in burglaries over the last decade in many areas of the United States, an astonishing phenomenon to many.

Burglar alarm systems come in many varieties, from the simple to the highly elaborate, all decked out with their respective components, boasted benefits, and unique features.

The simplest burglar alarm system consists of a pair of magnetic contacts, a movement detector, a siren, a control panel, and a keypad. Accessory items include additional contacts, video cameras, panic buttons, and other types of detectors (i.e. fire and safety). The latest in burglar alarm system technology involves the use of touch screen computers or the Internet in controlling your system enabling you to still monitor your house while away from home.

The drop in prices attributed to great competition is factor to be considered in the growing popular use of burglar alarm systems. Another factor is the changes in the economy. As more people search for additional income, more houses are left empty as people trudge off to work. The common anxiety felt by many people of leaving a vulnerable house is believed to also help boost sales in the burglar alarm system industry.

There are skeptics who insist that unsavory sales personnel take advantage of people’s paranoia and distrust regarding house safety. Even people who already have existing burglar alarm system installed in their homes are prone to upgrade their models after a few years to keep up with the latest trends. Newer models, after all, have more sophisticated features designed to bring more protection.
