Maybe you have come across some company offering a deal where you get a free system but then have to sign a contract for several years, with a monthly monitoring charge? This may not be the best way to protect your home and your family.

Chances are that even if the offer is for a free home security system, that there will be a cost in there somewhere.

Regardless of where you live, chances are that someone in your neighborhood has had their home broken. In fact, my neighbor had her home broken into in the middle of the day. She left her door unlocked and went to the store and was home in thirty minutes and in that time someone had walked right in her home and stole a bunch of tools that we being used to remodel her home.

Someone obviously had been watching the place and knew that there were renovations going on. If she simply had locked her door and turned on her alarm system then nothing would likely have happened.

Let’s face it, simply locking your doors is part of a practical burglary prevention system. Also, keeping a large dog on the premises also works. So, in a sense these things may be considered a free home security system.

No one is immune to being burglarized. Which is why everyone should have some type of crime prevention devices in their home. So, if you are on a tight budget then even getting an inexpensive or so-called free home security system is better than nothing.

Many people are simply too trusting in this day and age. They leave their spare key under a mat or in a flower pot or something along these lines. This is not practicing good security for the home. Remember, a house security system is more than just having an alarm and other security devices, it is being careful and not careless.

C-Mount or CS-Mount?

C-mount and CS-Mount lenses offer similar performance, the only real difference is the way the lens mounts to the camera. And that’s not a problem since the adapter to convert ‘C-Mount’ to ‘CS-Mount’ comes with the camera. This enables the camera to use either C-Mount or CS-Mount lenses.

Lenses can be changed!

They simply unscrew from the camera body, just like the way lenses are removed from traditional cameras. There are lens options from 2.5mm up to 500mm providing many different magnification options.

In general, an 8mm lens is like a 4mm lens magnified 200%. A 16mm lens is like the 4mm lens magnified 400%

Varifocal Lenses

You can also use a varifocal lens on a c-mount camera body. The higher millimeter of the lens the further distance viewable. C-Mount cameras can use a varifocal lens. This is a huge advantage because you can adjust zoom and focus. With Varifocal lenses the focus can be varied from 5mm to 20mm or more.

Even after installed, the varifocal camera lens can be adjusted to choose a variety of focal distances and angles of view. An example of where you might use a varifocal lens is outside (or inside) a warehouse or parking lot where you need more distance than 35 feet.

Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ)

Pan-Tilt-Zoom Cameras also known as PTZ cameras are excellent devices to use when you want to ‘look around’ your surveillance area.

PTZ cameras allow you to pan an entire room, tilt up and down and zoom in on anything or anybody within the sight of the lens.

PTZ cameras can be set to automatic or manual mode or both. In automatic mode, hundreds of points can be set for the camera to look at. The duration that the camera looks at a given set point can be adjusted from less than a second to as long as you would like.

There are some variances in different models. Some have 17x zooms while others have 50x zooms or more.

About CCTV Security Cameras: Closed circuit television also known as CCTV is the industry standard in surveillance security cameras. CCTV can be a single network of cameras or multiple networks of camera linked together via switches, internet, dvr or wide area computer technology. CCTV Video data is analog. The analog signal can be converted to digital via CCTV Digital Video Recorders. Once the video data is digital it can be managed just like any other computer data and can be stored automatically on computers and network storage devices.

Every home security system has a keypad where the security code is put in to arm and disarm it and this is often where the problems can begin. When the security code is put in to the control panel wrong it is possible to accidentally send a false alarm to the monitoring center. This can many times be caused by the numbers on the keypad being to small for the eyes to see properly. It can by corrected in several ways first there are keypads that have larger numbers that can replace the one with the smaller numbers and there by reduce the amount of inaccurate codes that are keyed in.

Another way to avoid keying in the wrong code is by using a remote that will arm and disarm the home security system. Rather than some bulky remote that needs to be placed in a purse or pocket these are small devices that can be placed on a key ring and this makes them as convenient to use as it dose to carry. To use this remote upon leaving the house all that needs to be done is to lock the doors as normal upon leaving and from the outside or the driveway the home security system can then be armed with the touch of a button.

The remote alone can eliminate false alarms that have occurred during the process of keying in the code to arm or disarm the home security system with the easy to use remote.

There are other things that can cause false alarms that are just as easy to handle, like not arming the system if children are in and out of the house during the day, while the system can not protect the family if it is not armed it also becomes questionable when a system is set off to frequently.

This is also true if there are pets that are outside at night when motion lighting that is wired into the system when this lighting is on the pets may set a false alarm. In this case the security alarm system can be turned off while the pets are outside and armed when they return in the house. If this is not possible then the other option is to forego the motion lighting instead of having false alarms sent to the monitoring center.

Adding a monitoring service can be a good investment too, so ask around and see what good receommendations that you get for such a service in your area as the quality of some services can vary considerably from one locale to another.

If the home has already been inhabited and you are purchasing it from someone else, there are some very important security measures that you want to be sure to take as you gain occupancy of the home. The most important are the locks on all of the outside doors. It is a good practice to change every lock that can be accessed from outside when you take up residence. The previous owner could have hidden a key to an outside door and then forgot about it, or the key may have even been stolen or lost and has fallen into the wrong hands. At any rate, it is a risk that should not be taken. Having all of the locks changed as you move in is an investment in peace of mind, and don’t forget the windows either. If they use locks that have keys, you might as well change them too while you are at it. If the windows do not have locks at all, now is the time to install them and make sure that the windows cannot be opened wide enough to allow entry by someone climbing through them.

As soon as you move in, go around and introduce yourself to your neighbors. Let them see you and get to know who you and your family are so if they see someone else snooping outside your house they won’t just assume that it is one of your family. Offer to watch their property too, and if there is a neighborhood watch program, be sure to take part in it. These kind of programs can be a very effective crime prevention method.

Usually home inspections are made before property is exhanged to be sure that all is in working order, but ask the inspector to be sure that the fire alarms and gas and electric appliances are in good working order and do not present a safety hazard before you move in. And also inspect your washing machine hose for leaks and cracking as this often causes home floods that are potentially very expensive.

These simple precautions can have a dramatic impact on helping make your new home more safe and secure.
