Statistics show that burglars have three enemies when it comes to breaking into your house. Time is the first one. The more time it takes to break into your house the more likely the burglar is to get caught. Consequently, the less he will pursue the burglary if it takes more than a few minutes.

Noise is the second one. If a burglar does break into your house and there is an alarm he will be startled by it and chances are he will leave. He doesn’t want the attention a loud security alarm will bring.

The third enemy of a burglar for burglary prevention is home lighting; either exterior lighting or interior lighting-preferably both. The bad guys always want to work under cover of darkness. Security lighting can be a great way to improve your home security and work towards burglary prevention.

When the bad guys see lights on inside a house, or lights randomly going on and off, they make the assumption that people are at home. So they move onto another target. There is a device called a programmable random timer that can randomly program up to 20 different lights and/or appliances such as a TV or radio giving the external appearance that someone is in the house.

Another popular device screws into any light socket and will automatically turn the light on if the ambient light goes below a certain level. Other devices for home lighting or security lighting include timers that will turn lights on when programmed.

One of the most effective home security devices for exterior lighting is the floodlight DVR. It is a powerful security light that is motion activated and completely weatherproof. It only goes on when someone goes in front of it. It has a 180° viewing range up to 33 feet away. When the light comes on, a DVR is activated and can record in color a 90° field of view. All images are recorded to an SD card for easy viewing. There is a feature that allows for the oldest video to be deleted so new video can be added. The flood light DVR also has a microphone and two pre-recorded audio alarms and two alarms that are user recorded. The device has a complete wall mounting unit to make installation a snap.

Security lighting is a great way to improve your home security. Home lighting, especially exterior lighting, goes a long way to sending a message to the bad guys to pick on somebody else.

Breaks-ins in houses can generally be avoided if the person that lives takes a few precautions to protect their house. The majority of break-ins occur when the lock is removed from the front entrance, so it makes sense that a good way to protect your house is to protect the door. Door protection will present a challenge to a burglar who wants to get in, either making them give up, or at least spend longer in the process, thus making him more likely to be spotted and recognizable to someone.

Three main types of residential burglary prevention door guards are available. They are door chains, door kick-in bars, and stainless steel screen mesh door guards. For the first type, a door chain consists of a chain attached to the door which hooks into a slot on the doorframe when the door is closed. With a door chain, you can partially open the door to see who your caller is, without giving that caller an open invitation to forcibly enter your premises. That chain can only be released by the homeowner who must then close the door in order to unhook it.

There are different types of door chain systems available: a simple chain, a chain which can be unlocked from outside with a key, a chain combined with a sliding bolt, and a chain with an in-built alarm which is triggered when someone tries to enter. It’s a very simple job to attach a door chain and it does not require any special skills. Door chains could cost you anywhere from $5 to $20, depending upon the material, strength and the type of chain.

A residential burglary prevention door kick-in bar is designed to prevent a door from being forced open. It’s a heavy-duty metal bar that is attached horizontally across the door. It’s a two-point door lock that locks both sides of the door. It costs around $150.

Putting a steel mesh door in is a good way to protect your home. It is a big obstacle for an invader to overcome, and they will most likely give up before they succeed. This also provides additional protection for the door, and it’s a way to speak with visitors before you let them in. This protection will set you back around six to seven hundred dollars.

Taking preventative measures against crime, rather than waiting until after it has happened, is a wise decision. Door guards in residential areas help deter burglars, thus preventing one from experiencing break-ins. They also help homeowners worry less, by protecting their home from unwanted guests.

Before you leave home for your family vacation, make a burglary prevention plan as well. Preventing crime during family travel starts with making sure your home is secure while you are away.

Thieves look for homes that are unoccupied. The key to keeping burglars from selecting your home as their next target is making it look like you never left: Newspapers piled on your steps are an invitation to thieves. Stop mail and newspapers, and ask a trusted neighbor to pick up any deliveries that might be made while you are gone. Connect some lamps and radio/TV in various parts of your home to automatic timers, so they turn on and off at appropriate times. Arrange to have your lawn mowed (or sidewalk shoveled) while you are gone. Don’t leave keys in obvious places like in the mail box or under a flower pot or door mat. Leave your house key with a trusted neighbor. Most police departments don’t have enough police officers to watch everyone’s home while they are on vacation. Instead, have a neighbor keep an eye on your house or apartment, and report unusual activity to the police. Have a neighbor park their car in your driveway overnight. Don’t leave notes indicating your absence. And don’t publicize the fact you are going on vacation ahead of time. Consider unplugging your electric garage door opener while you are gone. This will prevent your garage door from opening “by accident” while you are away. Make sure all your door and window locks are in working order – and use them. Turn off or turn down your telephone ringer. A phone ringing and ringing is a clue to a would-be burglar that no one is home. This is especially important if you are living in an apartment building where burglars may be more likely to hear your phone ringing. Use call-forwarding to forward in-coming calls to another number that will be answered in your absence. Consider turning off your main water valve before you leave. That way, if a pipe bursts while you are gone, you won’t come home to an indoor swimming pool in your basement. You’ll enjoy your vacation much more if you know you’re home or apartment is secure while you are away.
