There is a great deal more considerations than simply making sure that all of your blind spots are covered. This is especially important if you are unsure about the technical specifications of your preferred camera equipment. There are generally seven major questions that you should ask when determining the type of camera security system that is best for you. These questions are:

What sorts of security cameras are best for your needs? If you already have a certain type of camera in mind, it can be very helpful in making your decision. You must also ensure that the cameras are properly connected to monitoring devices in a way that prevents tampering or alteration.

What is the best video management system for your needs? This question is often best answered by a professional. If you only require a single camera, your system will be very simple. However, hundreds of cameras may require a very sophisticated management system. Most importantly make sure you see the system software in live action and that it is easy to use.

What are your storage needs? Determine how long you will need to archive the video. Most incidences are discovered within days but as an industry standard 30 days is the most common storage log. There are instances that you may need to store video for longer periods of time. This may even be governed by different laws and government agencies. Always make sure you export video incidences as soon as they are discovered. Leaving them on the systems hard drive is a recipe for disaster.

What are your video analytics needs? Many people confuse video analytics with video motion detection. Although systems can be pricey, video analytics actually uses technology to focus on specific suspicious behavior such as mass movement of products or people and can even identify certain characteristics in people or situations. Motion detection simply assumes any change is important in the video scene.

How will you view surveillance footage? The days of tape recorders is long gone and having to watch the entire tape in fast forward. However, using the latest technology and digital video recorders you can instantly search to a particular time and date and quickly scan through the video footage. In some cases, you can use a feature that only searches for motion activity in a particular area of the overall scene. This feature can greatly reduce the time spent reviewing video.

Will cameras be enough? You may need a far more advanced system than surveillance cameras. If you want to have a log of an event and prevent such an event from happening, you may need other security systems to support the footage. Cameras can provide a log of an event but cannot necessarily prevent such an even from occurring. If the damage is already done, the cameras that you use may be nothing more than a painful reminder.

How do external Security alarm systems work?

The simplest security alarm systems work on a “broken” circuit concept. These alarms are built into an entrance way, like a door or window, and the way they work is very simple. Electrical current must have a path to flow through. If you break the path, the charge is broken and the current stops. In a closed circuit system, the path that the electricity travels on is closed when a door or window is closed or shut. This means that the electricity can continue to flow from one side to the other. If the door or window is opened, it breaks the path the electricity is traveling on. This signals an alarm to go off. Letting you know a door or window has been opened.

In an open circuit system, the opposite holds true. When you open a door or window with this system it closes the system or flow of electricity and the alarm will go off. Letting you know a door or window is open. Perhaps, by someone you were not expecting. You may want to use a closed circuit, rather then an open one, as a burglar can cut the wires on the open circuit fairly easily.

Some open and closed circuit systems use a magnet embedded in the door or window that lines up with a switch. Others use a spring-driven switch. There are also the switches that are little buttons that are pressed by the pressure of the closed door or window and released when it is opened.

How do interior security alarm systems work?

While circuit alarms can work fairly well to keep an intruder out, what do you do if one gets past the circuit alarms and gets inside? Motion detectors are probably your best defense against an intruder who gets inside.

There are several different types of motion detectors in the world. You see them at work every time you go to the grocery store. They open the door for you. The door works on a radar based motion detector. The little box you see above the door sends out a microwave signal or ultrasonic sound waves. These units then wait for the waves to reflect off of something, usually you, and bounce back. When they bounce off of you, it displaces the reflection in a disturbed pattern and it then opens the door. With this type of security alarm system, the box is in the room and when the pattern is disturbed it send a signal to set off the alarm.

There are many different security alarm systems on the market. Some can be had for around $10 as a DIY project, while others require a specialist to install. The choice is yours on which you choose.

Statistically, homes located in certain zones with good law enforcement and neighborhood watch protection are also far less likely to be hit.

Are guns a good measure of self defense? The average person, without training, is far more likely to injure himself or herself with a gun than an intruder, at least statistically speaking. That being said, with proper training it can be an asset to protect a person in the event of an actual intrusion. However, the vast majority of people are far more likely to have the weapon turned against them to a detrimental end. If you must own a gun, always go through the proper training and legal channels, and keep the weapon constantly under lock and key to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

How can a person defend himself or herself in the event of an intrusion? The more quickly help is on the way, the better off a person is in a distress situation such as a break in. When a monitored home security system has already notified authorities of the dire situation, then it’s far more likely the individual will be able to fend off intruders in the meantime. Never try to attack an aggressor, but always try to defend yourself with any nearby items, and of course by creating barriers in between you and the individual like locked doors.

4. A home safe is another valuable home security component. If for some reason thieves do manage to get past all of your security system defenses, a home safe can thwart all their efforts. Burglars do not want to spend a lot of time inside a home as every minute that they are inside increases the possibility that they can be detected and apprehended for their crime. A well placed and solidly installed home safe makes all the hard work and effort that they will have to go through to get into it much harder to justify, and so often prevents the theft of your most valuable possessions.

5. Including other monitoring systems along with your home security system can be very valuable for peace of mind too. Often companies can hook in a fire alarm system to the main alarm too, and if the fire alarm is triggered the appropriate fire station will be notified. Personal and medical alarms can be integrated this way too and that can be especially valuable for those with severe health problems and the elderly who live alone.
