Don’t forget to change the locks on storage units as well. If you live in an apartment, the management is usually responsible for this. Make them aware that you want the locks changed (even if they claim the locks were recently switched). Management will likely want a copy of the door keys in case of emergency. Make sure this is the only key you give out. Make sure you keep those doors locked, even while you are home.

Don’t forget to lock those windows, too. Make sure the locking mechanism works – even try to open the locked window from outside just to be certain it doesn’t fail. Sliding glass doors are also an easy point of entry for even a poorly trained thief. To make it more difficult, you will want to place a support, even a piece of a broom handle, in the runners. This makes it impossible for the door to be forced open. This is a simple but effective home security measure.

Introduce yourself to your neighbors and get to know their names and faces. It makes it easier to spot suspicious people, and keep the entire neighborhood safe. If there is a community watch, you might even want to think about joining, or at least getting phone numbers and e-mail addresses of the members to whom you can report your concerns.

If there are any places with poor lighting, in the parking area for example, make sure you notify the HOA or property management right away. This is something that they need to take care of right away as it compromises the security of the whole community.
